Interview with Broneah Kiteboarding Co-Founder Keegan Myers.
How does kiteboarding compare, in your mind, to wakeboarding or any other sport that you find comparable?
There really is no comparison, kiteboarding is the best sport ever invented. It combines the ultimate feeling of being connected with nature (similar to surfing, kayaking, sailing, etc) with the adrenaline of some of the most extreme sports (motocross, wakeboarding, skateboarding, etc). But the most beautiful part of this is that the risk of injury is so low compared to other sports that give you the same adrenaline. It is a sport you can do at the most extreme level or just for a great workout. You can make it as safe and simple, as you want, or as heart pumping, as you want.
What’s so great about it? What hooked you?
When I met a guy in Italy that was just coming off the water after a long session and he told me he was only 75 years old! If I can do this sport through my 70’s or even 80’s and not to mention it is the most exciting sport ever, what else could you want? After participating in the great sport of Motocross for many years, and having my body subject to constant pounding, I was ready for a sport that gives me excitement and keeps me safe, that’s kiteboarding! Not to mention it is done 100% with nature, allowing you to become much more in tune with mother earth.
What’s hardest about it?
Kiteboarding takes patience! You can never predict the wind and weather, which is for Mother Nature to decide. Due to this you can never guarantee your sessions. Just like surfers can never guarantee waves every day. This forces you to watch the weather very closely and be ready to go when the conditions are good. This requires the patience to keep going at it even if the conditions are not perfect when you have the time to head out. Getting through the initial learning phase when your beginning can be difficult, that’s why taking part in kiteboarding lessons and camps is so important to get riding quickly. Money spent on instruction is the best money spent in this sport!
What’s sort of the key trick to it? What is it that, once you get that down, you’re really kiteboarding?
The key to kiteboarding is putting all the elements together into one fluid motion. Knowing the wind, controlling the kite, directing and edging your board, and ripping upwind. Once someone puts all of these elements together into one fluid motion they are kiteboarding! It takes the patience of learning each of these elements. Once someone puts this all together all the hard work it takes to learn the sport makes it all worthwhile.
